The grape and the grain
BeerCat was established in 2013 in Sant Marçal, about 10km from Vilafranca del Penedès. We all know the region makes great wine, produces fine olive oil and has some fantastic restaurants; our mission was at once simple and hugely ambitious: add beer to that illustrious list and in so doing make the Penedès a destination not only for wine and cava fans but for beer lovers too.
Cava and craft beer follow very similar processes and the Penedès region seemed a logical place to set up a brewery. We found a local manufacturer that produced stainless steel tanks for the wine industry and we worked together to produce a bespoke brewhouse. We built our brewery from the ground up using local manufacturers, suppliers and skills.
In 2015 we had reached capacity in our Sant Marçal brewery and made a decision to move the brewery to Vilafranca del Penedès. We were keen to be in the centre of the town and eventually decided upon the Moli d’en Rovira district of Vilafranca del Penedès, which was formerly the principal industrial zone for the viticulture industry and where the well-known Torres & Pinord wineries are situated. Following extensive renovation works, our new brewery started production in March 2016 and a new bar and restaurant opened two months later.
